The Casualties: Interview

Jake Kolatis of The Casualties at Vans Warped Tour 2010 at Pomona Fairplex in Pomona CA on August 11th 2010 - Interview by Aniruddh Andrew Bansal for Metal Assault…

Andrew: You guys were great today. Looks like you had fun playing.

Jake: Yeah man, it was a good time. Our fans are pretty
hardcore so there's always an explosive amount of energy and it's pretty
much all we can ask for dude, people getting wired to the music and us
getting wired to the tip!

Andrew: You've been on the whole of this Warped Tour, which is into its 39th day today. How has it gone for you overall?

Jake: It's great man. It's been a lot of sun and a lot of crazy drives but it's all worth it because when we get up there and
shred everyday, the response is good, it's awesome. There is no way you can match that kind of energy. Warped Tour is so rad to do, because when you're hungry you get fed, the crowds are good, you cover the country and even hit Canada a little bit. We're stoked man. Everything has been
great but we're a little bit burnt right now because it's the last week.
We've got four or five more days to do. It'll be good to get back to
the shier you know, see the dog, see the friends and see the bars again.

Andrew: How do you compare the previous times you did the
entire Warped Tour to this one, in terms of the line-up, the crowds and everything else?

Jake: We did ten shows in 2001 and they were good. We did the
whole thing in 2002 we loved it and then came back in 2004. That was amazing and that's when everything was just blowing up for the band.
From there it kept a good plateau of steady rock. 2006 was good but I
would say 2010 is way better than 2006, man. I like the fact that there are more rockers now, and people are starting to weed out the garbage from the good stuff. The crowds are bigger and the bands have just had an overall good response right now. That's how I feel. May be I'm crazy
and just seeing what I want to see. But it feels that way (laughs).

Andrew: You're getting half an hour to 35 minutes to play on this tour. How are making best use of that in terms of the song selection?

Jake: It's hard man. As you said, we get half an hour and we
have seven fucking albums. We've got to just pick the hits from each one so to speak. We're playing some new stuff too, two new songs. You've got to bring out songs that people know because you've only got a half hour.
When we do our own tours we do our own stuff, and play some more
rare kind of stuff. But yeah, you've got to kill it in that half an hour so you've got to bring all the heavy fucking jams out (laughs).

Andrew: Talking of the new stuff, I guess you'll be playing more of it on your own tour. When can we expect your own tour?

Jake: We're going to get a longer set when we go out with
Gwar in the fall. That tour is October, November and December and it covers pretty much everywhere in the States and Canada so we will be playing some more stuff off of the new record. It'll be fun to have a
little more time.

Andrew: How is the new record going for you guys?

Jake: It's going great, considering that there are no more
record stores any more. There's just a lot of online stuff. We're
stoked, you know, and I just like that people hear the music, at this
point. We put out a record not to make money, but to get the music to
the people, to aggressive rock fans and punk fans, and metal fans.
People that come to the show, want to get rowdy, want to get down with
their friends, have a good time and just escape everyday bullshit grind.
That's what we're here for. We live outside of society. People that also live outside of society who have to go into their shitty jobs, we had at one point to, we get that. That's where we're from. The kids in the crowd, we're the same as them but on stage for 45 minutes.

Andrew: Talking more about the show today, you had the 'chicken fight' thing. How did that start? I've never seen that at a show before!

Jake: That was something Jorge [Herrera, vocals] experienced
in the early 80s. So he brought that back from his experiences at shows back then.
So it's something fun to do and it was (laughs) grass today so no one was breaking any bones on the pavement. So we were like
'Right, let's do this!', you know (laughs). But I can't take credit for it. That's all Jorge right there.

Andrew: Yeah and the grass was pretty wet so I think they did it on purpose.

Jake: Yeah (laughs).

Andrew: The show was crazy but do you think it's much crazier when there is no barrier, in a small, closed place?

Jake: Yeah I like the smaller club vibe because it's a little
more intimate. The atmosphere is better with stage dives and cool stuff like that, and there's not like a security crew up front. I understand what Warped Tour has to do and why they have to do it and we're happy to be part of it.
Both things are fun. It's cool to play the big festivals but it's also good to get right down to the turf. Like CBGB's days

Andrew: Who would you cite as your biggest influences?

Jake: For me, as Jake the guitarist speaking, I would say
GBH, Blitz, going over to Cro-mags, Agnostic Front, Exploited, going over to Slayer, early Metallica, I just like heavy shit. There are huge bands that I like and there are little ones too. I like bands like Guilt
Trip, little bands that you'd never have heard of, and big bands like Slayer that everyone does. Then I'm also into outlaw country and stuff, like old Highway Men and Chris Christophson.
I like anything that has balls, heart and passion. I don't like a lot of bands on this tour that
are just like a flash in the pan. If I want to hear night club music,
I'll go to night club. I'm here for rock 'n roll, punk and metal, that's what we're into.
It has to mean something. If you had to struggle and you wrote a song, that's what I want to hear.

Andrew: It's interesting that you mentioned Metallica because they used to record quite a few punk covers back in the day, like the Misfits and all that. So it's good that you have that influence
too.

Jake: Yeah the Garage Days and stuff. People need to fucking
relax. That band is a good band. They just gave out a cool record. I
like them and I don't care [what people think]. Yeah, some records I
don't listen to but dude, it is what is man. Those people have been
writing music for fucking 30 years so there are stages of things.
If you like a band, embrace the band. Be a true believer.

Andrew: On this tour, you must have had a lot of fun travelling around. What is the craziest thing that happened?

Jake: On this tour, nothing too crazy because the Casualties
are trying to be good boys and behave, painting over the mould (laughs).
We don't want to get kicked off the tour. We've done some things that were bad. I was on Kevin Lyman's [creator of Warped Tour, the Taste of Chaos, and Mayhem tours] bus and I passed out drunk and peed in the hallway.
I don't remember doing that everybody else told me the next day
(laughs), so things like that have been happening. But we haven't
really been throwing down with any bands as much as I'd like to.

Andrew: So the Casualties had no casualties on this tour.

Jake: No no no. We're behaving dude, we're behaving (laughs).

Andrew: Over the years, in your career, what are some of the fondest memories you can think of right now?

Jake: Just seeing the world, dude. Going to Europe for the
first time, touring the States for the first time, those are the things that you remember because it's just this influx of feelings and being away from home, being scared, being stoked, happy, glorious, all these things and you're just playing with a guitar in your hand.
People are getting stoked for it and it opens up your mind. I encourage everyone in
a band or not in a band, to travel and get a little cultured.
If you do that, you will not be stressed about a lot of things and you'll open your mind to a lot of stuff. There's a whole world out there. See it before you're fucking dead in a morgue. Get tattooed, get crazy, so when
you're in the morgue, people look at your body and go, 'Holy shit, look at this guy'(laughs). This guy saw some fucking action, yeah! Pick up a guitar instead of a gun man, do that.

Andrew: Other than the Gwar tour, what else are you looking forward to this year?

Jake: The Gwar tour is an epic thing. I don't know if we're
going to make it through that! It's three months and we've never been that long together.
I think we're going to break up during this tour.
I'm saying it right now so you know (laughs).
I'm making a statement. I don't think we're going to last! But If we do, after that I'd love to
eventually do our own tour again and start writing a new record if we can make it.

Andrew: That's funny. Thanks a lot for the interview Jake. It was great talking to you.

Jake: This was cool. Yeah!!
