No dia 15 de Outubro de 1981 a banda escocesa actuou em directo no programa televisivo britânico, aqui fica um relato do que se sucedeu após a apresentação...
Circa 1981, The Exploited were invited to perform on BBC's Top of the Pops, one of the most watched music programs in all of Britain, and what happened next became one of the most jaw-dropping and bitterly ironic moments in punk rock history.
Their single "Dead Cities" had already climbed to number thirty-one on the UK national charts and reportedly sold around twenty thousand copies before the television appearance, a remarkable achievement for a raw punk band from Edinburgh who played loud, fast, and completely unfiltered.
But the moment they appeared on that shiny mainstream stage, something extraordinary happened in reverse. Sales the very next day dropped to roughly fifty copies. Fifty. Their own fanbase, the fiercely loyal working-class punks and skinheads who had claimed The Exploited as their own, saw the television appearance as an unforgivable act of selling out.
The hardcore punk band Conflict was so outraged that they recorded an entire song called "Exploitation" specifically about The Exploited's decision to appear on the show, igniting a fierce rivalry that divided the punk community for years.
And yet, to this day, music critics and historians call that Top of the Pops performance "incendiary," describing it as the perfect raw soundtrack to a Britain that was literally burning, with city riots erupting across the country that very summer of 1981.
The Exploited had walked into the most commercial music show in Britain and still managed to be the most dangerous thing on television.
They didn't sell out, they just terrified a new audience. The irony is staggering, the beauty is real, and the legend of that performance only grows with every passing decade.
