Interview with Sin
By: Blissfulviolet

Say it isn’t so, Ministry has called it quits. Al Jourgensen and crew have officially
released their last offering, The Last Sucker. A worldwide tour will commence soon,
followed by a cover album to be released sometime in 2008. I was glad to chat with
guitarist Sin, who shared all the details on the legendary band.

Blissfulviolet: Hey Sin what’s going on?

Sin: Things are going well, how are you?

Blissfulviolet: I’m doing great. Are you calling from El Paso?

Sin: I am in El Paso. You’re in Texas as well, right?

Blissfulviolet: Yeah, I’m here in San Antonio actually.

Sin: Oh god, don’t tell me that, that’s my favorite place…

Blissfulviolet: Coming from LA how have you been enjoying Texas so far?

Sin: I love it, Texas is my favorite state. I’ve been coming here to El Paso for a year and a
half now but after touring I’ve been in Texas many times now and I love it.

Blissfulviolet: It’s a completely different atmosphere though compared to LA; a completely
different world.

Sin: Completely different than El Paso. There are other cities in Texas that are around not
just like LA, but you know more of a night life going on. I dig El Paso though.

Blissfulviolet: So what is life like over there on the 13th Planet? Tell me what Jourgensen’s
studio is like?

Sin: It’s unbelievably cool, a very creative atmosphere. It’s very laid back; you know it’s a
blast…it’s a blast working here. It doesn’t feel like this big corporate machine. It’s very artist friendly and artist spirited; so there’s a very cool vibe and atmosphere here.

Blissfulviolet: Great to hear. Can you tell me about yourself? What inspired you to play
guitar and how you entered the Ministry/RevCo picture?

Sin: Sure, absolutely…To be honest with you I was about 5 years old when I first realized that
I wanted to play guitar and that this is what I wanted to do. An older cousin of mine had
introduced me to Kiss and brought over the Kiss ‘Alive’ album. From that point on, I pretty
much knew what I wanted to do. That’s what I’ve been doing ever since. I started playing
guitar at the age of 10 and this has always been my dream, my goal and inspiration this whole
time.
As far as how I got into RevCo and got in touch with these guys…My previous band had the
same booking agent as Ministry and Revolting Cocks and I got introduced to Al Jourgensen
and I think it was in December of 2005 that they were putting the touring lineup for Revolting
Cocks and they asked if I wanted to be part of it. I said yes and that’s how I eventually ended
up here with Ministry.

Blissfulviolet: You were a huge Ministry fan at the time?

Sin: Absolutely.

Blissfulviolet: This must have been an amazing accomplishment for you. How was the transition like from being a huge fan to now being a huge fan in the band?

Sin: You know it’s funny because I’m still a huge Ministry fan. I mean here I am in the band
but I still look at Ministry as a whole; from a fans point of view. It’s been great; everyone here
has made it a great experience for me. It’s also kind of a mind boggling thing for me, to be in
the studio working with a guy that I have looked up to for so many years; Who has influenced
my style of writing, my style of playing. I mean it’s a turning gig for me and I am very thankful
and grateful for it.…You know I have to pinch myself everyday.

Blissfulviolet: (laughs).

Sin: (laughs) To make sure this is all really happening.

Blissfulviolet: Amazing, I can only imagine. How was it recording ‘The Last Sucker?’ I’m
pretty sure you guys had a blast and the album also featured many guest appearances. How
was the experience?

Sin: The writing and the recording went down a little different. Basically about a year ago I
showed up here in El Paso and I had some songs that I had written. I played them for Al and
he dug what I did and so basically it was just me and Al doing the songs that we co wrote
together. I’ll record all the guitars and bass…Al would come in and do his thing and then
Tommy came in and did his songs and then Raven came in and did his songs. I got lucky
enough to play guitar on Raven’s songs, as well as Al’s songs; so it was a really cool
environment and experience for me. Burton from Fear Factory came in and he sang on a
couple of tracks. So it was an amazing recording experience for me, the best I have ever been
involved in.

Blissfulviolet: At what point did you realize that ‘The Last Sucker’ was going to be Minsitry’s
last album? How did Jourgensen break the news and how did everyone except his decision?

Sin: He actually told me sometime last year. I was on tour with the Revolting Cocks and he
had expressed to me that he wanted to make one final Ministry album that this would be it. I
have known about this for quite sometime, but it really sunk in when we were in the studio. We
all just kept talking about it, that this would be ‘THE FINAL ALBUM.' It was real bittersweet but at the same time, we are all extremely proud to be part of it.

Blissfulviolet: I’m sure fans have been contacting you all with complaints that Ministry has
come to an end…

Sin: Yeah lots of fans have been expressing that they don’t want Ministry to stop…that they
don’t want this to be Ministry’s final album. I understand Al’s decision to put Ministry to rest,
but it is definitely not the end of Al Jourgensen. I mean he has tons of upcoming projects. He has the new Revolting Cocks album to do; he’s working on soundtracks, he’s got a lot of stuff to do.
So yeah, we have been receiving a few calls and e-mails with people being bummed out, but there’s still going to be a lot of projects coming out.

Blissfulviolet: I read on the net that Ministry is planning to release an album full of cover
songs, is this true?

Sin: Yes, we just finished recording it and we are mixing that album right now. It should be
released sometime in April or May of 2008.

Blissfulviolet: So then it’s also true that you guys covered ‘Under My Thumb’ from the Rolling Stones?

Sin: Yes we did.

Blissfulviolet: Yes, I love that song!

Sin: Wait till you hear this version, you’re going to fucking shit your pants.

Blissfulviolet: (Laughs).

Sin: It is such a fucking cool mixed version of that song and it’s got Burton singing in it and we got Tony Campos from Static X…the
bass in that song is phenomenal. That track just rules.

Blissfulviolet: I can’t wait to hear it. I heard what you guys did with The Doors, ‘Roadhouse Blues’ song.
It was crazy to hear that song kicked up a notch, it’s
awesome.

Sin: Yeah, every track like that is going to be totally different and they will definitely
have a Ministry stamp on it. I think we brought something new to life with these songs and I
think people will enjoy them.

Blissfulviolet: How did the tracks for this album get chosen? Were they just some of Al’s
favorite songs?

Sin: Yeah and it was songs that we are all personally familiar with and have listened to. For
me it was songs that I grew up listening to as a kid. But yeah they were pretty much songs that
Al had picked.

Blissfulviolet: You guys will tour off ‘The Last Sucker,” correct?

Sin: Yes, actually it’s going to be called ‘The C U LaTour’ and it starts in March 2008, it’s
going to be a world tour and we’ll end it August 2008. Our publicist will be releasing the
touring lineup, opening acts and all the official tour dates, hopefully before the end of this
month.

Blissfulviolet: So I guess I’ll see you guys in San Antonio soon.

Sin: (Laughs) Absolutely. Let’s see San Antonio…I think we’ll probably play at that same
place that we played last year. I think its called SunSet?

Blissfulviolet: Oh yeah, SunSet Station, it’s an awesome venue.

Sin: Did you go to the last tour?

Blissfulviolet: Yeah. I’ve seen Ministry a few times and it was at that venue. Or maybe not
last year, but the tour before, I can’t remember.

Sin: But you’re definitely coming to this one?

Blissfulviolet: I’m sure I’ll be there.

Sin: Don’t make me go out and find you…

Blissfulviolet: Ministry’s last tour, I have to be there. Oh yeah before I forget to tell ya, I ran
across those ‘Mock Mercials’ and the ‘End of Days’ count down videos and I have to say they
were hilarious.

Sin: You ran across those? (laughs) That’s great.

Blissfulviolet: Yeah…and I must say, the cheesy, old school, low budget style made it
uniquely hilarious. You guys just made them yourself?

Sin: Al had the idea to promote Ministry’s last album through commercial video’s and the guy
whose directing the film that Al’s doing the soundtrack for, ‘Wicked Lake,’ is the one that
directed and produced those videos. Yeah I also think they came out hilarious. I don’t think
people were expecting that. They were all over Headbangers Ball, VH1 and I think they did the
trick.

Blissfulviolet: I agree, seems like you guys have had lots of fun. How has working with Al
Jourgensen impacted your life as a musician and a person?

Sin: Just being around Al Jourgensen, from the tour and being in the studio; I’ve learned so
much about the band itself, the recording process and the writing process. He has taught me
so many things sort of indirectly and he is a person that is full of knowledge and experience
and you can learn so many things from him. He has been nothing but an inspiration to me, a
great person to work with and be around and I’m grateful and thankful to be part of this. You
know, I’ve learned many things in this past year and a half that I have never even encountered
in my career until that point. So I owe him a lot and I hope that I can continue to work with him
after we are finished with Ministry.

Blissfulviolet: What are some of your plans after Ministry?

Sin: Right now I am actually writing and recording the new Revolting Cocks album and then
after that there will be a Revolting Cocks cover album as well. I believe, don’t quote me on
this, but I believe the Revolting Cocks will tour sometime next year in October or November.
After all this I’m going to work on my own project, hopefully with 13th Planet Records with Al
Jourgensen producing it. I don’t have a name for that yet, I’m just staring to get the band and
material together but hopefully it should be out in late 2008.

Blissfulviolet: So I take it the sound will be industrial influenced?

Sin: Yeah it’s defiantly going to have that but I’m also going to bring all of my influences to the
table. I think that it’s inevitable that it’s going to have that industrial edge to it, because that is big part of my style.
But there will also be elements of Rock, Metal and others.

Blissfulviolet: Well I won’t take up anymore of your time. Thanks for doing this interview for
Beyond the Dark Horizon. Do you have any final comments that you would like to add for
Ministry fans out there?

Sin: A big huge thank you to all the Ministry fans worldwide, a big shout out and hello to all the
Piss Ants worldwide. And a big thanks to everyone who has supported me and welcomed me
as the new guy to the mix here. And thanks for everyone’s positive feedback on this new
album; it means a lot to me and everyone in the band.
